Breathe with Me is a large-scale public participatory artwork for the entire world that invites audiences to paint their own individual ‘breath’. Every breath will take the form of painted blue parallel lines on the artworks’ canvas walls: each line for an exhale. 

Breathe with Me is a work that is both deeply personal, and also a work that touches on many
aspects of our lives, and the lives of our entire planet. Guided by the act of breathing, the participation invites audiences to reflect on themselves and the world around them. With all participant‘s painted ‘breaths’ gathered together, the artwork visualizes not only our individual awareness of ourselves, but also our communities, societies, and environment. 

Altogether, Breathe with Me is a collective breath for the world.

As an artwork that speaks to many urgent issues of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 global goals - from good health, to strong communities and climate action – Jeppe Hein and ART 2030, a non-profit organization uniting art with the UN agenda, initiated Breathe with Me first at the UN Headquarters and in Central Park, New York City, during the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly from 21st to 27th
of September 2019. The artwork coincided with this years’ official focus on climate action. Since its launch in September 2019, Breathe with Me has invited communities from all over the world to take part in different forms: as a public and participatory installation; as educational activations in schools and museums; and even as virtual workshops guided by the artist on Instagram.

Breathe with Me est une œuvre d’art participative à grande échelle, ouverte au public du monde entier, qui invite chacun à peindre sa propre « respiration ». Chaque respiration prend la forme de lignes parallèles bleues peintes sur les murs en toile de l’œuvre : chaque ligne représente une expiration.

Breathe with Me est à la fois une œuvre profondément personnelle et une œuvre qui touche de nombreux aspects de nos vies ainsi que celle de notre planète entière. Guidée par l’acte de respirer, la participation invite le public à réfléchir à lui-même et au monde qui l’entoure. En rassemblant toutes les « respirations » peintes par les participants, l’œuvre visualise non seulement notre conscience individuelle, mais aussi nos communautés, nos sociétés et notre environnement. Ensemble, Breathe with Me devient un souffle collectif pour le monde.

En tant qu’œuvre abordant de nombreuses questions urgentes de l’Agenda 2030 pour le développement durable des Nations Unies et ses 17 objectifs mondiaux – de la bonne santé aux communautés fortes et à l’action climatique – Jeppe Hein et ART 2030 ont initié Breathe with Me pour la première fois au siège des Nations Unies et à Central Park, à New York City, lors de la 74e session de l’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies du 21 au 27 septembre 2019. L’œuvre coïncidait avec l’accent officiel de cette année-là sur l’action climatique. Breathe with Me is een grootschalig, publiek participatief kunstwerk voor de hele wereld dat het publiek uitnodigt om hun eigen individuele ‘adem’ te schilderen. Elke ademhaling krijgt de vorm van geschilderde blauwe parallelle lijnen op de canvaswanden van het kunstwerk: elke lijn staat voor een uitademing.

Breathe with Me is zowel een diep persoonlijk werk als een werk dat vele aspecten van ons leven en dat van onze hele planeet raakt. Geleid door de handeling van het ademen nodigt de participatie het publiek uit om te reflecteren op zichzelf en de wereld om hen heen. Door alle geschilderde ‘ademen’ van de deelnemers samen te brengen, visualiseert het kunstwerk niet alleen ons individuele zelfbewustzijn, maar ook onze gemeenschappen, samenlevingen en onze omgeving. Samen vormt Breathe with Me een collectieve adem voor de wereld.

Als kunstwerk dat inspeelt op vele urgente thema’s van de Agenda 2030 voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling van de Verenigde Naties en haar 17 mondiale doelstellingen – van goede gezondheid tot sterke gemeenschappen en klimaatactie – initieerden Jeppe Hein en ART 2030 Breathe with Me voor het eerst op het hoofdkwartier van de Verenigde Naties en in Central Park, New York City, tijdens de 74e sessie van de Algemene Vergadering van de Verenigde Naties van 21 tot en met 27 september 2019. Het kunstwerk viel samen met de officiële focus van dat jaar op klimaatactie.
