Paul McCarthy originally trained as a painter, but his main interest lies in everyday activities and the mess created by them. His work includes performance, sculpture, installation, and film. His references are rooted in things typically American, such as Disneyland and Hollywood, as well as more general things like celebrity culture and bad politics. He is a critical analyst of mass media and consumer-driven American society and its hypocrisy, double standards and repression.

McCarthy's pirates are part of a collaborative series he made with his son Damon McCarthy, which takes Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean to a disturbing place. In sculptures the pirate is a key figure articulating the psychology of a hermetically closed, male-dominated world where moral barriers are torn down. McCarthy's practice parodies social hierarchies and cultural conventions and challenges the canon of art.

NL
