Paul McCarthy (b. Salt Lake City, Utah, USA) is renowned for his bold and often controversial artworks that challenge societal norms and conventions. For ‘Michael Jackson (green & red),’ McCarthy derives the iconography from Jeff Koons’ iconic work ‘Michael Jackson and Bubbles’ (1988). Koons depicted the late King of Pop in highly stylized, flawless porcelain that emphasized the manufactured nature of celebrity. In McCarthy’s spin-off series, Jackson’s portrayal undergoes mutation, featuring cartoon-like head and feet, deviating significantly form the polished perfection of Koons’ original rendition.McCarthy's use of hyperbole and distortion highlights the artificiality of celebrity culture, calling into question the authenticity of the images and narratives propagated by the media. ‘Michael Jackson (green & red)’ serves as a commentary on the cult of celebrity, the public's insatiable appetite for fame and upkeep of parasocial relationships. By presenting Jackson as a ambiguous figure, McCarthy challenges the idealized image of the celebrity, exposing the vulnerabilities and contradictions inherent in fame.

NL
