Located in downtown Brussels, within the vibrant Dansaert district—long celebrated for its spirit of artistic experimentation—the Vanhaerents Art Collection occupies a former industrial warehouse dating back to 1926. Once a sanitary depot, the 3,500 m² (38,000 sq ft) building was radically transformed by Belgian architects Robbrecht en Daem into a hybrid of storage, exhibition, and workspaces.
This transformation from a purely functional site into a dynamic art space mirrors the Collection’s vision: to challenge conventions and continuously redefine how art can be presented and experienced. The depot-inspired design not only allows for large-scale installations and a wide range of media but also reveals what is often hidden—the mechanics of a living collection. Visitors encounter not just carefully staged exhibitions, but the ongoing processes of conservation, installation, and change, underscoring art as something alive and in constant motion.
Embracing its location in the heart of Brussels, close to major museums and galleries, the building stands as both a symbol and a catalyst of transformation—where history and industrial memory meet contemporary creativity. It reflects the Vanhaerents family’s commitment to bold artistic dialogue, and to shaping a future in which downtown Brussels itself becomes an open stage for cultural imagination.
